You need to melt the plastic to remove it. I don't like to put non oem toyota parts on in general but i've changed many a joint with standard affordable joints in the past on various vehicles without any issues. These joints have a portion of the yoke pressed over the cap as shown in the picture.
Drive the u joint out of the driveshaft with a hammer. Get a small propane torch. On some cars there will be a center support which must be undone by removing the two center support mounting bolts.
1) the official bmw approach: The dealership wants $80 a piece for rear drive shaft u joints. Heat the ujoint until you see plastic bubbling in the small holes.
The drive shaft is balanced as a unit, it is not balanced with the trans or the rear diff. Once the opposite cap has been driven out that 1/4 then you can remove the differential end of the shaft from the joint! Remove retaining clips, press out the joints and reinstall.
Flip the shaft 180degrees and drive on the exposed end that you just removed the cap from in order to remove the opposite cap. Using a plastic hammer gently shock the driveshaft loose from the differential flange by striking the rear yoke (u joint mount). At this point the back half of the shaft will be free so hang onto it.
All i had to do was unbolt the end at the differential and then slide the spline out to replace the u. The problem with the 1200gs joints is that instead of using circlips, bmw 'stakes' them in place. At that point, make sure you are wearing eye goggles, gloves, and arm protection.
